The history of Chester Yacht Club begins with the history of local fishing and boat building, which led to the establishment of the Yacht Club. Despite its apparent remoteness to sailing, the "rattling of teacups" enabled the Club to survive the difficult times. When membership dues failed to meet expenses, the lady members’ social events kept the cash flow healthy. Since 1902, CYC has been a major presence not only on the Maritime sailing scene but also on the fabric of the community of Chester. Results of the societal changes wrought by the first half of the twentieth century were influencing CYC and its community during the 1950s and 1960s. This narrative ends in 1969, when the modern club we know struggled into being.

Claudette Gaudet Sapp was born in Memramcook N.B., the heart of Acadia. After meeting her future husband at Dalhousie University, she has spent most of her life in Nova Scotia. Now the mother of two, grandmother of one, she and her husband live in Chester, where their home is on the finish line of Chester Yacht Club races. Sailing has always been a major part of the family’s life. Claudette claims she has “outgrown” racing, but one suspects that aging joints and slowness on the frequent and fast tacking of racing may be the real reasons she plays golf or gardens, while the rest of the family races. This book combines her family‘s love for "the Village" with their love of sailing.
