“The number of trials in cardiology is overwhelming, and for family doctors, a book on the most important ones would be just what the doctor ordered. … It is this kind of summary, efficiently distilling the essential pearls of each study while simultaneously being comprehensive in scope, which provides the busy family doctor with the key learning points that he or she needs in daily practice.”

—Sandy Buchman, MD CCFP FCFP, President, The Ontario College of Family Physicians

"Drugs per se are no threat to a patient. A physician’s ignorance either through lack of knowledge of interaction or through lack of adequate observation of the patient and proper interpretation of new events is dangerous."
Kenneth Lloyd Melmon, 1978

"He is the best physician who knows the worthlessness of most medicines."
Benjamin Franklin

The editors of this first edition of 25 Landmark Trials in Cardiology are to be commended for their efforts. They bring together practical, up-to-date reviews of the major clinical trials that have had such a positive impact on patient survival and length of life. David Sackett describes evidence-based medicine as "the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients" (BMJ 13 Jan 1996). All that separates us from quackery is the judicious use of scientific evidence. This book provides that evidence.
Peter Hamilton, BSc,MBBCh,FRCPC(C), Internal Medicine Program Director, University of Alberta
