Chibley the Cat is the Rodent Control Officer aboard the sailing ship Picton Castle. They have come to Halifax for a Tall Ships Festival. This is Chibley’s first trip and she is very excited. She meets Clara and Erik the Red, who live aboard CSS Acadia. Erik is a bit of a dare devil. He refers to Chibley, as “one fine feline” and decides to show her the waterfront attractions. Chibley’s shipmates caution her not to stray too far from the waterfront, but each day Erik takes Chibley a little further away. This worries Chibley, but she goes along. Each day is a new and exciting adventure. On the last day, returning late, she finds the slip empty. Where is the ship? Will they come back for her? Afraid and alone she sits looking at the Harbour. She just wants to be with her shipmates. Will she ever sail on the Picton Castle again, or are her sailing days over?

I am a real cat and I make my home aboard the barque Picton Castle, a working tall ship teaching sailing skills, trading goods and delivering educational supplies on ’round-the-world voyages. I am popular with children and adults in all the countries we visit. I am very honoured to act as an ambassador representing Canadians and their generosity. I am happy to share my story. A percentage from the sales of my books go to purchase educational supplies for schools in the South Pacific and South Africa. —Chibley

The Author and the Illustrator
Ruth Wells became interested in the Picton Castle in 2004 while compiling articles for sailing magazines. She started following their adventures on-line and decided that she and Chibley should take on the task of telling Chibley’s stories to help raise funds for school supplies. It has turned into a great passion and a wonderful retirement project which keeps her very busy promoting, as well as writing. The author has the great privilege of occasionally crewing aboard this beautiful sailing vessel.

Yolanda Poplawska recived her early training as a graphic designer. Yolanda’s illustration and design work has appeared in magazines, galleries, and picture books, including the popular Theodore Too series. The hardcover edition of A Halifax ABC was shortlisted for the 2006 Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Illustration. Yolanda lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia artist Doug MacCabe enjoys painting scenes of classic cars and old buildings. His choice of medium is oil, because of its forgiving properties. He has studied under William DeGarthe and international artist Cheri Smith, and has taken life classes at NSCAD. He teaches adults painting at the U.F.C.W. Training Centre  and has also taught children’s art classes. Doug was the illustrator for Mel’s Story, which won the Ambassador’s Award in 2003. He is very pleased to be part of the creation of Chibley: The Cat Who Went to Sea.

Thanks for everything! You have been very professional, efficient and helpful. I look forward to working with you again. Ruth Wells
